Today, the Federal Government announced the introduction of new rules of conduct for rental property owners. In an effort to protect tenants' rights and ensure that landlords are acting in an ethical and responsible manner, the regulations will set out guidelines for rental property owners nationwide.
The rules will cover all aspects of owning and managing rental properties, including tenant screening, rent collection, maintenance, safety, advertising, and more. The regulations will make it more difficult for landlords to misuse their powers, by requiring them to post clear and accessible notices about tenant rights, and outlining standard lease rules. They will also dictate that landlords must repair any known safety issues, provide reasonable notice before entry, and promptly return deposits at the end of a lease agreement.

Furthermore, landlords will be prohibited from retaliating against tenants for exercising their rights, adding an additional layer of protection for renters. The regulations also spell out that landlords cannot increase the amount of rent or change any other terms without first giving notice. Landlords will also be responsible for ensuring rent is paid on time, and for providing tenants with documents for reporting any complaints they may have.
Ultimately, the regulations are designed to create more transparency and accountability between landlords and their tenants. The government hopes that these rules of conduct will reduce the number of disputes between renters and rental property owners, ensuring a safer and more pleasant environment for all involved.
