The Ellis Factory is a mixed-use building located in a great downtown neighborhood along the Merrimack River. The building is a contributing element to the Washington Street Shoe District, a compact district of 56 buildings characterized by brick manufacturing buildings from the late 19th & early 20th centuries, and is significant for its associations with shoe manufacturing in Haverhill. As the shoe-making industry in Haverhill expanded in the mid-19th century, so did the mill district and by 1882 nearly every shoe factory was located within this new district. As Haverhill continues to evolve, this building is undergoing a transformation into 59 apartments and 3,500 square feet of commercial space on the ground level. The Ellis Factory building is particularly notable for its oversized black framed windows and warm brick hues.
